Nurturing Futures: Asiah Clay’s Journey as Bean Path’s 2020 Scholarship Recipient

As a graduating senior at Murrah High School and coming from a single parent-low income household, I was applying for all of the scholarships that I could to help finance my college education. One evening while talking with one of my teachers about my plans to attend Mississippi State to pursue a clinical engineering degree they told me about Dr. Sephus, how she's a Jackson native and had also graduated Mississippi State with an engineering degree. It was that same teacher that shared the Sowing Seeds Student Scholarship with me.

Receiving that scholarship allowed me to get necessities like my books, a laptop and even some professional development opportunities, but it also made me want to pay it forward and give back to Dr. Sephus, The Bean Path and my city—Jackson. I’ve volunteered with The Bean Path for workshops and try to help out anytime I’m home.

The Bean Path is doing a good job in bringing awareness to the STEM field with the different programs, workshops and even the summer camp that they offer. My advice to any high school student considering a career in STEM, get involved with The Bean Path!

I’m in my final year as a chemical engineering major at Mississippi State and I just wrapped up my second summer internship in the family care division at Procter & Gamble. Four years later and I’m still benefiting from the scholarship that I received from The Bean Path.
